24 Solar Terms - "Beginning of Winter"

“Beginning of Winter” term is one of 24 periods in traditional Chinese lunisolar calendars, and is also the first solar term of winter. According to the theory of Nourishing life in TCM, the weather is getting colder at this time. Because of winter is associated with kidneys, which hold our body’s fundamental energies, it is particularly important to revitalize the kidneys during the winter.

In winter, just as the energy of the tree goes into the roots, so to does the energy of our bodies. The kidneys are the roots of the body. If we use this time to strengthen the kidneys, our own leaves and fruit will be strong.
How to specifically target and nourish the kidneys in winter? We would like to provide you several recommendations:

  1. Rest is really important for the kidneys in winter. Good sleep can boost our immune system;
  2. Warm foods are beneficial to the kidneys in winter. Our bodies need food like slow-cooked soups made with nutritious
  3. vegetables and meats;
  4. Traditional Chinese Herbs, such as Gou Qi Zi, Dang Shen, Du Zhong, Shan Yao, can tonify the kidneys.
